Matter product certification and mass production process
This is the overall Matter development certification process

Certification Steps
1. Become a CSA Member
There are four types of CAS memberships, details of which can be found on the csa website :
Associate Members use standards-based IoT products but do not directly build or manufacture them. To join at the Associate level and certify white-label products, a company must partner with an Alliance Participant or Promoter member through Certification Transfer Program .
Adopter Members use existing, approved specifications to build products. Adopters can access completed, approved standards documents, certify products through Alliance certification programs, and use Alliance technology logos and trademarks for certified products.
Participant Members contribute to and develop standards they will later adopt and use. Participants can access Alliance Working Groups, are hands-on in developing specifications, and gain early access to draft specifications and testing, with opportunity to develop and get to market faster.
Promoter Members contribute to, develop, and adopt Alliance standards and enjoy all other member level benefits. Promoters help lead the Alliance with final approval on all standards, hold a seat on the Alliance Board of Directors, and may lead and participate in Board Committees.
2. Get VID
Vendor ID is also known as Manufacturer ID code, by sending a request email to certification@csa-iot.org, the affiliate will assign a VID to your company and reply by email.
The VID database is updated every month at https://groups.csa-iot.org/wg/members-all/document/10905.
3. Developing products
Customers develop their own products based on bk_matter, during which Beken will help customers familiarize themselves with the SDK, the current example can meet most of the customer’s needs, and guide customers to use chip-tool and other ecological testing. basically, it can be completed within a week.
Product development can be found in Developing Matter’s new device type product from scratch .
For certification, Matter will require a series of self-tests to be passed depending on the configuration of the product.
The following files are required for testing:
pics xml file Used to define the functionality of the product, the lab will test the product based on the functionality checked in this file. The corresponding version of the file can be accessed through the lab or downloaded from the CAS website: https://groups.csa-iot.org/wg/matter-csg/document/26122.
pics tool An online tool for editing pics xml, you can use it by directly visiting https://picstool.csa-iot.org/.
Test harness An automated testing tool provided by the Matter Alliance. Projects that can be automated tested will rely on this tool.
chip-tool Matter mainly relies on tools in the testing process. For specific usage methods, please refer to chip-tool
chip-cert Used to generate Matter certificates, CDs, etc. For specific usage and distribution, please refer to CHIP Certificate Tool .
Other documents Various test documents for different versions of Matter will be uploaded here.
4. Confirm the authentication of the underlying protocol
ODM/OEM can directly inherit the relevant alliance certification of Wi-Fi/BLE/Thread/Ethernet from the chip manufacturer. CSA requirements are as follows:
Ethernet (IEEE PMA Compliance Attestation required)
Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi 4/802.11n or later)
Thread (1.3.0 or later)
Bluetooth to support Matter commissioning (LE v4.0 or later)
5. Certification testing
Customers need to choose the following five Matter authentication methods based on their own circumstances. Beken’s chip has passed Matterr certification, and Beken will assist customers in solving certification problems.
Full Certification: Customers need to contact the laboratory to communicate the plan for testing the product. Products are certified after passing testing by alliance-authorized laboratories.
Certification by Similarity(CbS): Products derived from certified products are granted certification based on their similarity to previous products.
Product Family Certification(PFC): In the same series of products, if each sub-product is a direct variant of a single parent product. For example, the same product is sold in different parts of the world.
Certification Transfer Program(CTP): Directly OEM certified products from other manufacturers (no hardware or software changes except new product casing).
Customers can plan for product certification in advance. If they are unsure, they can directly consult Beken or certification@csa-iot.org
For new certifications, after passing the test, the third-party laboratory will issue a test report. For other certification types, relevant documents need to be filled in and CSA will conduct the review.
6. Submit certification application
Customers need to submit a certification application on CSA’s Certification Web Tool and pay the corresponding certification fee. During this period, if the CSA certification team has any questions about the application form, it will contact the applicant by email.
Note, because Matter devices need to rely on PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) to ensure that the device is a real Matter device from the manufacturer. The entire PKI contains level 3 certificates: PAA => PAI => DAC. Each Matter device has a unique DAC (Device Attestation Certificate).
Customers have 2 options to obtain DAC
Cooperate with the PKI provider and use the PKI provider’s PAA CA.
Build your own device certification PKI and operate your own PAA.
If you choose the first option, you need to write origin_vendor_id and origin_product_id when filling out the application. This will be reflected in the CD (Certification Declaration) below.
7. CSA Review and Approval
After the CSA certification team reviews the submitted report, if there are no problems, the applicant will be notified by email and an electronic certificate and CD (Certification Declaration) will be issued. During subsequent production, the CD certificate will be burned into the device in advance.
8. Enter DCL
Customers need to log in to product information at https://webui.dcl.csa-iot.org. Then notify CSA in the Certification Web Tool, and CSA will add product information in compliance. For specific and detailed operation steps, CSA has an official instruction manual.
Note
In the mass production stage, customers need to pre-burn DAC and CD certificates on the production line, as well as VID, PID, product name and other information that will not change. Beken can provide factory-data Tool , package the Matter information into a separate bin, and burn the firmware into flash.
